Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Thirteen people have been killed when a cable car on Lake Maggiore, about 60 miles northwest of Milan in northern Italy and on the Swiss border, crashed into the dirt.
Several ambulances, paramedics, and helicopters were mobilized following the accident in the area.
A total of three people, including two children, were rescued and taken to hospital.
The Stresa Mottarone cable car, which is in service in the region, crashed while taking foreign and local tourists from the famous town of Stresa, where Lake Maggiore is located, to the top of Mount Mottarone, about 1,400 meters above sea level, in 20 minutes, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
The cable car crashed in a wooded area called Verbania, near Lake Maggiore, when the iron ropes broke off, it said.
"There was a serious accident on the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. The National Alpine Rescue Team was the first to respond. Two helicopter ambulances transported the two injured children who were rescued alive to a hospital in Turin," the statement said.
