İrem Uzun –TDO-The Syrian army said that in the early hours of Thursday, Israeli air force has targeted a military site near the town of Masyaf in Hama province, killing two people and causing material damage. Arab media and a monitoring group reported that the target was suspected of chemical weapons production. Israel has not commented about the accusations yet.

The Syrian army accused Israel of being a confidence booster for the collapsed morale of the jihadist group of Islamic State (IS) and warned Israel of the “dangerous repercussions of this aggressive action to the security and stability of the region”.

A UK-based monitoring group The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the strike hit a Scientific Studies and Research Centre facility, a site which the United States describes as “Syria’s chemical weapons manufacturer”, which is a charge that Syrian government strictly denies. The Observatory also said that strikes hit a military camp next to the center that was used to store ground-to-ground rockets and where personnel of Iran and its ally the Lebanese Hezbollah group had been seen more than once.

Although Israel has not given a clear speech about the strike yet, it is known that Israel is concerning about the rising power of Iran and Hezbollah in Syria. Hezbollah and Israel engaged in war in 2006 because of the Hezbollah’s intervention in the Syrian civil war on the side of Assad and it has proven that any new conflict between them could be more devastating. Nowadays, Israel is carrying out its largest military drills in 20 years along its northern border, including practicing an attack on Hezbollah inside Lebanon. A short time ago, President of Israel Mr Netanyahu said Iran was building facilities in Syria and Lebanon to produce precision-guided missiles "as part of its declared goal to eradicate Israel". He gave no details, but emphasised that this is something which Israel cannot accept.
