İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- Israel bombed Mezze Military Airbase which is outside Damascus and close to Assad’s presidential palace. Syrian state television quoted the army as several rockets were fired from an area near the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel just after midnight. A Syrian command said "Syrian army command and armed forces warn Israel of the repercussions of the flagrant attack and stresses its continued fight against (this) terrorism and amputate the arms of the perpetrators,"
Actually, it was not the first attack conducted by Israel in the region. Israeli army attacked several parts of Syria and officers claimed that they had responded to fire, coming from the regime and targeted so-called Hezbollah military centers in the country. Israel was against Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian Shiite forces, effective in the country. There were several mini-attacks to Syria, conducted by Israel, in the past four years. The same airport had offended by Israeli forces in 2013. The last attack was conducted in December 2016.
It has been claimed that Israel attacks to Syria, in order to have a seat in peace negotiations. Due to its control over approximately 400,000 Shiite militants, Iran increased its influence in the region. On the other hand, because of the great number of refugees in its borders and supported Free Syrian Army, Turkey became a significant figure in the Syrian Civil War. It has been argued that, as both of its rivals were accepted as interlocutors by the West regarding the crisis, Israel is trying to be a part of the conflict too.
Moreover, it has been asserted that Israel seeks to have a buffer zone near Golan Heights, as there are rich oil reserves, huge amount of investments in the region and national security objectives about there.
