Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Russian President Vladimir Putin's phone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday (yesterday) revealed that a compromise had been reached that Ukraine's separatists-controlled Donbass region should be given special status.
The two leaders also agreed to hold a quadruple Ukraine peace summit, the Kremlin said in a statement. Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France will take part in the summit, but no information on the date of the summit has yet been shared.
In early October, the Trilateral Communications Group, consisting of Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE), agreed that Donbass should be granted autonomous status after local elections were held.
Under the so-called' Steinmeier formula', the Donbass region will hold its local elections under Ukrainian law and its results will be approved by the OSCE.
