Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The German government announced that it had turned down Ukraine's request for indirect arms assistance.
The request was made by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenski, who was interviewed by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
"German Chancellor Angela Merkel has done a lot for Ukraine, but I was hoping for more from her, especially in the Normandy format. Germany can do more," he said.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said they believed the conflict in eastern Ukraine could only be resolved through political means.
Maas said in a statement that the solution to the issue was not weapons assistance.
"This situation will continue to outline our relationship with Ukraine and there will be no change in our stance. Arms deliveries will not work," he said, adding that they rejected Kyiv's request.
