FRANCE, BRITAIN, GERMANY CALL ON IRAN TO HALT URANIUM METAL WORK

16/02/2021

Selin ATAY-TDO- France, Germany and Britain have reported concern over Iran's production of uranium metal and have warned Iran against starting work on uranium metal.

"As the governments of France, Germany and Britain, we have anxiously noted the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) confirmation that Iran is producing uranium metal in violation of the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action (JCPOA). We strongly encourage Iran to end this activity, and return to full compliance with its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action without delay, if it is serious about preserving this agreement,” the French, German and British foreign ministries said in a joint statement.

In the joint statement, it is also stated that according to the agreement, Iran has committed that it will not produce uranium metal for 15 years, it will not conduct research and development of uranium metallurgy. The joint statement said that these studies are an important step in developing nuclear weapons and have no valid civil justification.

After former US President Donald Trump took office, Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action (JCPOA) on May 8, 2018 and began to re-impose sanctions on the Tehran administration. Iran also completely halted its commitments in the agreement on January 5, 2020 in response to U.S.-based sanctions and conducted a series of reprisals, including high-level uranium enrichment.
