Serhat TUNAR -TDO-The Greek government has announced that a floating barrier will be used to prevent irregular migration from Turkey to the Greek islands.
To that end, Greece's Defense Ministry has invited private companies to tender bids for the nearly threekm-long floating barrier within three months.
The announcement on the Greek Defense Ministry website did not clarify when the floating barrier, which will be used in the event of an emergency, was planned.
The barrier, which will be put into service by the Greek navy, is planned to be 1m high in total and 50 centimeters high above the sea and will be equipped with lights that break out on it.
According to the Greek Defense Ministry, the barrier project will cost a total of 500 thousand euros, including four years of maintenance.
Last year, over 60 thousand migrants had crossed into the Greek islands illegally.
