FIRST U.S. COMMERCIAL FLIGHT LANDS IN CUBA

Within the scope of the normalization of relations, US and Cuba took a historical step and began the first commercial flights on Wednesday, August 31. Flights between the two countries have not been performed since 1961.An airplane which belongs to Jet Blue Airlines took off from Florida and landed Santa Clara with 150 passengers which includes US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, CEO of JetBlue Robin Hayes and numerous journalists.The Cuban Foreign Ministry member Josefina Vidal made a statement on Twitter and said that “1st US scheduled flight arriving in Santa Clara Cuba today Aug.31 after 55 years.”Last year in July, in order to improve diplomatic relations US re-opened its embassy in Cuba. In this context, it might be argued that the launch of commercial flights between two countries as an important step towards the improvement of relations.
