Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- A 'controversial' drug developed against Alzheimer's disease has been approved in the United States (US) for the first time in nearly 18 years.

The Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm (aducanumab), which is in the experimental phase and developed by Biogen, has been allowed to be used for early stages, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement.

The drug, which is said to reduce amyloid-beta plaques in the brain, is a treatment that targets the source of the disease for the first time, the statement said.

Experts say the aim of the drug is to slow its progression rather than alleviate the symptoms of the disease.
