İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- Subjectivity in voting for Eurovision has always been debated. In case of a question, ‘’friendly’’ states, neighbors, or others given the answer as: they give the highest vote to their ‘’best’’ regarding their own cultures which is very similar to theirappetite of music. Barely, this answer is not enough for many states and several countries gave up joining the competition due to “unfairness”, such as Turkey.

Eurovision 2017 will be held in Kiev because Crimean Tatar singer Jamala won last year’s competition with a song about Josef Stalin’s deportation of her people during the Second World War, right after Russian annexation of Crimea.

It has been alleged that Russia would boycott the Eurovision song contest but recently Russian authorities announced that they would join the competition. According to the state television, successful singer Yuliya Samoyova will represent Russia, with the song named ‘’Flame is Burning’’, in Ukraine.

However, Samoyova may not be able to join the competition as Ukrainian authorities reject it. It has been revealed that she had performed in Crimea following the annexation in 2014.  She also confirmed the event.

A Ukrainian spokeswoman said it would be under security service’s authority to whether let her to enter Ukrainian territory or not, based on Ukrainian law and national security interests.

In November Ukraine banned 140 Russian cultural figures whose actions or statements ‘’contradicted’’ the interests of facilitating the security of their state. Also, French actor Gérard Depardieu was banned as he spoke in favor of Russian annexation of Crimea.

Regardless of its musical and artistic being, it bringsenormous amount of additional money to the city that host the competition. Private institutions, hotels, restaurants, cafes, become full with singers, dancers, trainers, their relatives, experts, and audiences from all over the World. Moreover, it is a matter of prestige. Nevertheless, it seems Eurovision started to be used as a messenger that you may be able to do allusive voting, punish or aggrandize certain states.
