Speaking about the refugee crisis, which continues unabated and has become one of the most important problems facing Europe, President of the EU Council Donald Franciszek Tusk said unless a solution is found quickly, passport free travel within the Schengen Zone would become impossible. Tusk said that disagreements among member states regarding border controls would become an EU problem.
According to the Schengen Protocol which was signed by 28 member states, citizens of these countries have the right to free travel within the borders of all signatories.
At this time in which the world’s largest influx of migrants is headed towards Europe, the number of undocumented immigrants in Turkey alone has reached 1.8 million. Refugees continue on their way towards Europe, as well as towards different parts of Turkey. Some European countries have started implementing border controls in order to deal with the influx of migrants and most recently Norway, which is not a member of the EU, has announced that it would impose restrictions on the entry of foreigners at its border gates.
Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has met European Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels to discuss the refugee and had announced that they had reached an agreement on joint planning regarding the issue.
The EU had announced financial support worth EUR 3 billion to Turkey in exchange for preventing the entry of migrants to Greece and had also taken up the issues of speeding up Turkey’s membership process and visa free travel for Turkish citizens as part of its incentives.
