Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Thierry Breton, a member of the European Commission in charge of the vaccination program, said Europe's ability to have a good tourist season this summer depends on "shifting into the next gear in vaccination."
Breton, who heads the European Union (EU) executive body's vaccine task force, said on a television and radio station that the EU should administer 420 million doses of the vaccine by mid-July.
Breton stated that this figure is necessary for the EU to achieve mass immunity, and said that "We must move on to the next gear" for the vaccination campaign.
Breton said the implementation of a joint EU vaccination certificate, scheduled for June, would also support the resumption of travel.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the third wave of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has begun and that the situation is "worrying", stressing the importance of rapid vaccination in Europe.
