EU TO IMPOSE NEW SANCTIONS ON MYANMAR JUNTA, COMPANIES -TOP ENVOY

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The European Union (EU) is preparing to announce new sanctions on military rule in Myanmar and the economic interests of the administration.

Eu High Representative for Foreign Relations Josep Borrell announced in an interview with Reuters news agency that there would be third-wave sanctions against the junta that seized the government in Myanmar on February 1st.

Borrell met with the Association of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN) ambassadors, of which Myanmar is a member, in Jakarta, Indonesia, and said ASEAN should continue to lead diplomatic efforts to restore stability in Myanmar.

Since the coup, the EU has decided to freeze the assets of 21 junta soldiers and civilians and impose a travel ban on them.
