EU REJECTS UK DEMAND TO RENEGOTIATE NORTH IRELAND PROTOCOL

13/09/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The European Union (EU) has rejected London's request to renegotiate the deal governing its trade position on Northern Ireland because it would cause instability and uncertainty.

Opening up, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, who oversees EU relations between the UK and the EU post-Brexit, said the Northern Ireland protocol should be properly implemented and that this was the only solution, not the cause of the problems.

"Renegotiating the protocol, as proposed by the UK government, means instability, uncertainty, and unpredictability in Northern Ireland," he said during a speech at Queen's University in Belfast, the capital.
