EU LEADERS AGREE TO IMPOSE SANCTIONS ON BELARUS

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The heads of state and government of European Union countries said it was impossible for elections in Belarus to be recognized on the grounds that they were not held free and fair.

Meeting via videoconferencing, European leaders agreed to sanction those held responsible for violence against demonstrators in Belarus and changing election results.

After the summit, the president of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, told reporters that the European Union is in solidarity with the Belarusian people and that the demands of the Belarusian People must be met.

He added that the European Union would impose sanctions on a significant number of people who cheated in the election and were responsible for violence against demonstrators.
