Robert HARNEIS -TDO- (FRANCE)- European media are reporting the opening of an investigation into the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX). The European anti-fraud office (OLAF) raided the offices of FRONTEX director Fabrice Leggeri and his chef de cabinet in Warsaw in early December, over alleged misconduct. The agency is accused of illegally rejecting migrants at the European frontier with Turkey on the Aegean Sea.
‘Such a visit does not necessarily indicate that offenses have been committed’ commented a spokesperson for OLAF. FRONTEX stated that ‘in accordance with its policy of transparency it is cooperating fully with the investigation.’
The investigation comes at an awkward moment as FRONTEX have just launched a recruiting campaign to raise the staff numbers to 10,000 by 2027.
According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, ‘European frontier guards, including German Federal police officers stop boats carrying refugees before they can reach Greek Islands and hand them over to Greek Coast Guards’. The magazine stated that Greek frontier guards regularly abandon refugees at sea and that there are videos that confirm this.
EU members of parliament have called for an investigation and some have called for the resignation of Frabrice Leggeri.
