Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The Spanish Interior Ministry announced that Josu Ternera, the leader of the ETA, has been arrested in France, claiming to have fought for the independence of the Basque region and is on the European Union's list of terrorist organizations.
Seeking for 17 years, Ternera was captured in the Sallanches region of France with a joint operation by French and Spanish police.
The ETA leader, whose real name was Antonio Urrutikoetxea, was accused of being responsible for the terrorist attack carried out by ETA in 1987, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Ternera also had an international arrest warrant since 2002.
The ETA terrorist organization, which claimed to have fought for the independence of the Basque Country, was established in 1958 and carried out attacks that killed around 800 people. In October 2011, ETA announced that it had abandoned all of its armed activities and then announced on 3 May 2018 that it had dissolved itself.
