Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the use of the vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech for the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) in the 12-15 age range.
The announcement followed a call by the World Health Organization (WHO) to speed up vaccination in Europe.
Marco Cavaleri, head of the vaccination strategy at the EMA, announced the decision at a press conference.
Cavaleri said the age group between the ages of 12 and 15 should be given two doses of the vaccine, with at least three weeks in between.
Research shows that the Pfizer vaccine "prevents Covid-19 at a high level" in children, Cavaleri said.
"From a safety point of view, the vaccine is well tolerated and the side effects in this age group are very similar to what we see in young adults, so they do not cause great concern," Cavaleri said in a statement.
WHO Europe Director Hans Kluge warned that the pandemic will not end until at least 70% of the population is vaccinated.
