Serhat TUNAR -TDO- At the United Nations-led Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Tunisia, the parties agreed that elections in the country will be held on December 24, 2021, Libya's Independence Day. Friday's decision at the 5-day forum in Tunisia was seen as an important turning point in terms of ending the civil war.
Speaking to AFP, Ghassan Salame, a former United Nations Special Representative for Libya, said: "I am very optimistic. Over the past two months, we have seen an increase in positive factors. It is a very important development that the decisions taken in Berlin are finally implemented. We know that a war that has lasted for years will not end in one day, it will take time. Supporters of the status quo and disgruntled foreign countries will try to disrupt this process, but I have never been more optimistic."
Leaders attending the conference in Berlin pledged to support a ceasefire in Libya, abide by the arms embargo and not interfere in the country's internal affairs.
