Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- Five villages in the west of the country have been evacuated due to forest fires in Greece.
At least 8 people were injured in the fires and dozens of homes were reduced to ashes.
Greek Citizens Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis told state television ERT that the fire started in woodland 30 kilometers from the country's third-largest city, Patras.
Chrysochoidis said the flames had descended the slopes and threatened coastal villages, also due to strong winds.
Chrysochoidis announced that 290 firefighters, 8 aircraft, and 7 helicopters responded to the fires.
A total of 58 forest fires have occurred in Greece in the last 24 hours due to heatwaves and strong winds.
