Selin ATAY-TDO- The Delhi police filed a case against 18-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg for her support on the ongoing farmers’ protest at Delhi borders. Thunberg has been accused of "criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity on grounds of religion".
Soon after Delhi Police filed the FIR against 18-year-old climate activist, "I still #StandWithFarmers and support their peaceful protest. No amount of hate, threats or violations of human rights will ever change that. #FarmerProtest" Thunberg tweeted.
In her first tweet on farmers’ protest, Thunberg said, “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India” while attaching an article on the ongoing farmers' protest in India. Alongside the Greta Thunberg, pop singer Rihanna also tweeted attracted global attention towards the farmers’ protest. Many politicians and artists, including Meena Harris, a lawyer and activist niece of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, have noted the protest by Indian farmers over social media and expressed support in their cause.
Jerry Dyer, the mayor of the Fresno administrative district, known as the agricultural capital of the US state of California, stressed on his Twitter account that they know the importance of agriculture and supported the protest of Indian farmers. "We stand with you for standing up against unfair government interference against all of you," Dyer said. A spokesman for the US State Department said in a statement that the US favours resolving any disputes between the parties through dialogue.
In September 2020, the government of India enacted 3 regulations that brought liberalization to the agricultural sector, ending the base price and support purchase policies. Indian farmers, on the other hand, argue that the new agricultural laws will reduce their earnings, give brokerage companies more powers and eventually leave themselves landless.
