11/07/2020

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and security policy of the European Union, said it was regrettable that the council of Ministers decision of 1934, which granted Hagia Sophia Museum status, was cancelled and that the administration was transferred to the Directorate of Religious Affairs.

"Turkey has developed a well-established tradition of cultural protection, as well as a well-known tradition of intellectual and cultural openness," said Josep Borrell, who said Hagia Sophia has a strong historical and universal value. The decision of the Council of Ministers to grant Hagia Sophia Museum status was annulled by the Council of state and President Erdogan's decision to give the monument to the administration of the Religious Affairs department is regrettable. Turkey, a founding member of the alliance of civilizations, has promised to foster dialogue between religions and cultures and strengthen tolerance and coexistence."
