Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- At least 54 people have died after a passenger train derailed in the eastern Taiwanese province of Hualien, in the direction of Taitung.
Another 156 people were injured at the time of the crash.
The country's official news agency said a parked truck caused the crash.
According to initial indications made after the accident, the passenger train about to enter the tunnel derailed as the parked vehicle skidded onto the tracks.
Law enforcement officials announced that an investigation into the crash was ongoing.
The eight-car train that crashed had about 350 passengers on board.
The train's 4th and 5th carriages were badly damaged in the crash.
Firefighters and search and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
