Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The United States and Russia are discussing the lifting of intellectual property rights in order to increase the production capacity of vaccines developed against the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19).
"This is a tremendous moment in the fight against Covid-19," World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said of US President Joe Biden's statement.
Leaders of European Union (EU) countries will also discuss the removal of patents protecting intellectual property rights related to vaccines at a summit meeting in Portugal on May 7th and 8th.
In his statement, Ghebreyesus praised the commitment of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to support the temporary waiver of intellectual property rights over Covid-19 vaccines in order to end the pandemic as soon as possible.
Ghebreyesus said his support for a temporary waiver of intellectual property rights over Covid-19 vaccines reflected the White House's "wisdom and moral leadership," adding that the statement was not a surprise to him and that he was already waiting for it from the Biden administration.
