Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- 26 people who contracted the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) died after a visit to Santa Claus in a care home in Belgium.
Officials said almost everyone tested positive for coronavirus, including 40 people who served alternately in the institution, with 85 elderly people in need of care at the Hemelrijck Nursing Home in the port city of Anvers in the north of the country.
Hemelrijck officials said that due to Sinterklaas, a children's holiday celebrated in Belgium, a group of volunteers visited the nursing home on December 5th dressed as Santa Claus and his assistant Zwarte Piet to cheer up the elderly people.
Following the visit, 26 people, mostly elderly, died at the institution, while some people's condition was aggravated, said in a statement.
Epidemic specialist Marc Van Ranst said in a statement that after the research, they found that the coronavirus was spreading from the same source and that it is not known that people who make morale visits carry coronavirus.
After examining the photos taken after the visit, it was revealed that many nursing home residents were not wearing masks.
