Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Hundreds of people opposing new and tougher measures to counter the coronavirus pandemic clashed with the Naples police in the late hours on Friday (23 Oct).
Some protesters threw smoke bombs, bottles and firecrackers in the city centre. The Naples police used tear gas to scatter the crowd.
The mainly young crowd disregarded a night-time curfew imposed late on Friday in the Campania region after coronavirus cases rose up to nearly 20,000 across Italy. During the clashes two people have been arrested and two police officers were slightly injured.
The Regional Governor Vincenzo de Luca had announced on Friday that the region (Campania) would go into lockdown after recording at least 2,200 daily cases, which constitutes approximately a 50% increase in daily cases reported one day earlier.
Meanwhile, daily cases on the national scale soared to 19,143 on the same day and raised concerns that the pandemic is getting out of control.
