German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with the leaders of 16 states via video conference and announced the new measures at a press conference.
Stating that the restrictions imposed in Germany had been extended until January 31, Chancellor Merkel urged German citizens not to go out of their homes for the next 3 weeks unless possible.
Merkel explained that warnings from health experts, the occupancy rate in intensive care units, the mutation of the virus and the increase in the speed of its spread were an important factor behind the extension decision they took.
