Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Nearly 5 million people are being tested for Covid-19 after a single asymptomatic case was reported on Saturday (Oct 24) in the Chinese prefecture of Kashgar in the far western region of Xinjiang. Chinese authorities also imposed lockdown measures in the prefecture.
The number of asymptomatic cases is the highest it has been for the last seven months.
So far, 137 additional cases have been reported, and all are asymptomatic according to Xinjiang’s regional health commission.
Close to 2.8 million people have been tested as of Sunday. The Chinese government plans to complete testing all of Kashgar’s 4.7 million population by Tuesday (Oct 27).
This is the second outbreak in Xinjiang since China’s first wave of coronavirus infections was largely brought under control in March.
Chinese authorities have closed schools in Kashgar and residents are prohibited to leave the city unless they have a negative test report.
