CONFRONT YOUR COLONIAL PAST, COUNCIL OF EUROPE TELLS PORTUGAL

25/03/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The Council of Europe said Portugal must take more concrete steps to combat racism and discrimination, confronting its colonial past and its role in the transatlantic slave trade.

"Portugal needs to acknowledge and do more to address past human rights violations to overcome racial prejudices against people of African descent who inherited from its colonial past and to address the historic slave trade," the Council of Europe's annual report on Portugal said.

The report stressed the need to revisit how colonial history was taught.

Portuguese ships carried nearly 6 million enslaved Africans across the Atlantic from the 15th century to the 19th century, and the slave trade continued until the 19th century when the Portuguese arrived on the West African coast in the late 1400s.
