Selin ATAY-TDO- Chinese pharmaceutical company SinoVac has announced that its vaccine against the novel type of coronavirus (Covid-19) could be ready by early next year.
Yin Weidong, the CEO of SinoVac, told reporters at his new factory in Beijing that he expects the vaccine candidate named "CoronaVac", which is undergoing third-stage clinical trials, to be ready by the beginning of 2021.
Yin Weidong said that when they started the vaccine study, their focus was on the city of Wuhan and China. However, soon after that in June and July, they had adjusted their strategy for the all countries of the world. He said that when the vaccine is completed, they will apply for permission from the health authorities of the countries concerned to distribute it in the United States and Europe.
On the other hand, strict regulations in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia have so far blocked the sale of vaccines produced in China in these countries. Reminded by journalists of the vaccine barrier, Yin Weidong expressed their hope that this could change.
Yin Weidong stressed that the Chinese government has allowed the emergency use of a vaccine candidate whose effectiveness has been proven in Stage 1 and 2 trials and no serious side effects have been found. He also noted that 90 percent of the company's employees, including himself, had received the vaccine during the trial phase.
Yin Weidong said that more than 24,000 people are participating in clinical trials of CoronaVac in Brazil, Turkey, and Indonesia, with additional trials scheduled for Bangladesh and possibly Chile.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said in a statement that issued in September 17, CoronaVac vaccine candidate 3 voluntary health workers belonging to Hacettepe University began to be tested. CoronaVac was registered as the first potential Covid-19 vaccine tested on humans in Turkey.
