CATALONIANS WANT INDEPENDENCE: CAN GREATER AUTONOMY PREVENT SEPARATISM?
On September 11th 2016, hundreds of thousands of people in several towns in the Catalonia region of Spain gathered to commemorate the Catalonian National Day (La Diada Nacional de Catalunya). La Diada is held on the anniversary of the 1714 defeat of Catalonians by Spanish forces and their loss of independence. The first commemoration was held in 1886, but the day was not celebrated between 1939 and 1980 following a ban imposed by the dictator Francisco Franco.By Assoc.
