CANADA’S PARLIAMENT DECLARES CHINA’S TREATMENT TO UYGHURS “GENOCIDE”

24/02/2021

İrem UZUN -TDO- Canada’s parliament has passed a non-binding motion that says China’s treatment of its Muslim Uyghur minority constitutes genocide. The motion, sponsored by the opposition Conservative Party, passed by a vote of 266-0 in the House of Commons on Monday, though Trudeau and nearly his entire cabinet abstained.

The motion was also amended just before the vote to call on the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Winter Olympics from Beijing if the treatment continues.  Trudeau’s Conservative rivals have been pressuring him to get tougher on China. After Canada arrested Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in 2018 on a U.S. warrant, China detained two Canadians on spying charges, igniting lingering diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

By calling the actions in China a genocide, Canada joins the United States, which made the determination shortly before Donald Trump left office. China’s ambassador to Canada criticized the vote, telling the Canadian Press that officials in Ottawa should stay out of China’s internal politics.  “We firmly oppose that because it runs counter to the facts. And it’s like, you know, interfering in our domestic affairs,” said Cong Peiwu. “There’s nothing like genocide happening in Xinjiang at all.”
