BIDEN: “NO TRADE DEAL WITH UK UNTIL IT RESPECTS NORTHERN IRISH PEACE DEAL”

İrem UZUN -TDO- U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has warned the United Kingdom it must honor Northern Ireland's 1998 peace agreement as it withdraws from the European Union or there would be no separate United States trade deal. "We can't allow the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a casualty of Brexit," Biden, an Irish-American, said in a tweet on Wednesday.

As Euronews reported, the warning comes amid international dismay at the British government's plan to give ministers legal powers to overrule parts of the legally-binding EU divorce deal. UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been visiting Washington trying to reassure U.S. politicians and diplomats. He says the UK has an "absolute" commitment to the Good Friday Agreement, accusing the EU of politicizing the Irish border issue. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he trusted the UK to "get this right". However, U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there was "no chance" of a UK-U.S. trade deal getting through the U.S. Congress if the UK violated international agreements, undermining the Good Friday Agreement.

The controversial UK Internal Market bill gives ministers powers to disapply parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol in the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, the formal divorce accord between the EU and the UK.
