İrem UZUN -TDO- Israel’s attorney general has indicted Benjamin Netanyahu for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, in a damning blow to the prime minister as he fights for his political survival.
The investigations were listed as Cases 4,000, 1,000, and 2,000.Case 1,000 alleges Netanyahu and his wife wrongfully received gifts in return for favours for wealthy friends. Within the scope of Case 2,000, He is alleged to have agreed a deal with the publisher of a major newspaper to promote legislation to weaken a rival daily in return for favourable coverage. In the third and most serious case, case 4,000, Netanyahu is accused of offering incentives worth close to £200m to the Israeli telecoms provider Bezeq in exchange for positive stories on an online news website it owns.
Netanyahu made a public statement following Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit's announcement that the prime minister is indicted on counts of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.In a 15-minute televised speech, Netanyahu railed against his political rivals and state institutions, accusing the police and judiciary of bias. Mr. Netanyahu said authorities "weren't after the truth, they were after me", and called on the country to "investigate the investigators". The prime minister described the charges as an "attempted coup", blaming them on a "tainted" process. He has also insisted he will not resign and is not legally obliged to do so.
