News Centre –TDO-  Austria’s Ambassador to Turkey Ulrike Tilly has hosted a reception at the Ankara JW Marriot Hotel to mark the Austrian National Day.

The reception was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister and President of EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı as well as many representatives of foreign missions in Ankara, diplomats and journalists.

After Ambassador Tilly greeted the guests at the entrance, the reception began with the playing of the national anthems of Austria and Turkey.

In her opening speech Ambassador Tilly thanked guests for attending and said “I am happy that the ties between our countries have been revitalised this year following a complicated period.”

Tilly said that Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl had visited Turkey this year, while Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had visited Austria and said “As the EU term president, we were pleased to host the Turkish foreign minister in Vienna about seven weeks ago.”

Ambassador Tilly said that consultations between the two countries were ongoing at high level talks.  

Deputy Foreign Minister and President of EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı said that Turkey and Austria had a shared past and added “We’ve been through some difficult times, but we have normalised our relations. Foreign ministers have exchanged visits. High level contacts continue.”

Pointing out he many Austrian citizens of Turkish origin, Kaymakcı said that they believed in the importance of alleviating all sorts of concerns about integration together.

Adding that Austria had important investments in Turkey, Kaymakcı said that while the volume of trade between the two countries was very satisfactory, it could rise further still.

Kaymakcı said that many Austrian tourists visited Turkey and that they hoped more students from Austria would come to study at Turkish universities through the Erasmus programme.

Kaymakcı continued:

“There is an EU dimension to our relationship. We hope to see the day come when Turkey has completed the membership criteria and Turkey and Austria start playing on the same team. We should become members of the same team when both Turkey and Europe are ready. We believe that from now on open mindedness, impartiality and sincerity will be the foundations of our talks in every field. I’m certain we will make progress. From now on, we will speak the language of understanding and cooperation.”

The reception continued with the cutting of the celebratory cake and refreshments.
