Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has renounced a fake image of an Australian soldier shared on the Twitter account of the Chinese government spokesman as “truly repugnant” and demanded for the immediate removal of the post.
The picture, showing a grinning Australian soldier holding a blood-stained knife to the throat of an Afghan child, was posted on Monday on the verified account of China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.
The Australian government demanded an apology from China and had asked Twitter to remove the tweet, which was pinned at the top of spokesman Zhao’s feed, said Morrison.
“It is utterly outrageous and cannot be justified on any basis, the Chinese government should be utterly ashamed of this post. It diminishes them in the world’s eyes.” Said Morrison.
The latest incident comes amid escalating political tensions between the two countries.
China has implemented a series of economic sanctions on Australian goods and state-controlled media have frequently attacked Australia over a number of issues.
The latest tweet incident appears to be a reaction to Canberra’s call for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.
