Selin ATAY-TDO-The president of Northern Cyprus, Mustafa Akıncı, attracted attention with his remarks on Operation Peace Spring. Mustafa Destici, leader of the Great Unity Party said that Mustafa Akıncı should be 'dismissed urgently'. " Since when has it been a crime to defend peace?" said Mustafa Akıncı, in response to his attention-grabbing remarks.

Northern Cyprus President Mustafa Akıncı, in a statement on his Facebook account, did not express clear support for the operation, and he said the 1974 Peace Campaign, which ended massacres against Turkish Cypriots, was also a war.

"In 1974, we called it a peace operation, but it was a war and bloodshed. Now, even if we call it The Fountain of peace, it is not running water but blood. Therefore, it is my greatest wish that dialogue and diplomacy come into play as soon as possible," he said.

"The so-called President of the TRNC, who has treacherous and harrowing words, no longer has any credibility and legitimacy before Turkey, the Turkish nation or the Turkish Cypriot people. He should either resign or be dismissed as soon as possible." The leader of Great Unity Party said as a reaction to Akıncı’s remarks.

"I would consciously invite those who distort and escalate the issue to common sense as soon as possible," Akıncı said in a statement as response to criticism about his previous remarks. Some sections from the new written statement made by President Mustafa Akıncı:

"The views I stated a few days ago via social media are my sincere thoughts, which I believe in. However, instead of understanding these thoughts correctly, unfair and disproportionate criticisms have been made… It is undoubtedly the common desire of all of us to get rid of the scourge of terror that Turkey has suffered so much.… It is essential to create a situation where Syria can maintain its own borders within its territorial integrity and Turkey can feel secure its own borders… I regret the unfair and hurtful statements used for me in some statements made, and I return them to their owners. Since when is it a crime to defend peace? What does it gain from being accused and defamed by this request?.... The Turkish Cypriot people attach great importance to the historical ties of friendship and brotherhood with Turkey… Turkey and the region will of course find a way out of this difficult period in peace….”
