İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-01.08.2017- White House stated that Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, provided his support to US President Donald Trump on imposing additional diplomatic and economic sanctions to North Korea regarding Kim Jun-Ung’s continuing ballistic missile tests.
In the statement, it says "President Donald J. Trump spoke today with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan to address North Korea’s launch of another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The two leaders agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and other countries near and far. President Trump and Prime Minister Abe committed to increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea, and to convincing other countries to follow suit’’. Also, it is alleged that Trump reminded US "ironclad commitment" to defend Japan and South Korea in case of an attack.
Recently, North Korea conducted its second succesful inter-continental ballistic missile test. According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile reached the altitude of 3,725 kilometers (2,314 miles) and traveled 998 kilometers for about 47 minutes before falling in the Sea of Japan. Following the test, Abe named it as a violation of United Nations Securtiy Council (UNSC) resolutions and called both Russian and Chinese authorities to join others and take measure against Pyongyang’s. Additionally, Trump condemned the test and said US would take any necessary steps to guarantee national security.
Therefore, like it was in the past, Japanese authorities will act together with Washington. On the other hand, China is under strict pressure to cut its economic ties with Pyongyang and end giving political support to North Korean authorities. It is significant to remind that the biggest importer of North Korean coal which is the main source of Pyongyang’s exports is China. Also, South Korea has already been an American ally especially against its rival. Even, US authorities settled powerful weapons on South Korean territory. Moreover, it seems Russia avoid to give concrete response on the issue quickly and try to manage the two sides at the same time. Consequently, balance in Asia, is becoming worse for Pyongyang.
