A SINGLE VACCINE AGAINST CORONAVIRUS COULD PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR MANY YEARS

Serhat TUNAR -TDO- Scientists conducting research on coronavirus believe the mutation rate of the virus, which infects hundreds of thousands of people, is low. If these scientists ' findings are confirmed in the long term, a single vaccine against the disease could provide protection for many years.

Peter Thielen and Tom Mehoke, molecular geneticists at the Applied Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University, study the genetic structure of the new type coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in samples taken from patients. Then he compares these samples to the first version of the virus in China.

"When we look at the rate of mutation, the first data we get suggests that Covid-19 is not a disease that needs to be renewed every year, like seasonal flu, but that requires a single vaccine," Thielen said."

However, the fact that it has not been long since the virus first appeared, and the limited number of samples studied, means that these results are not yet conclusive.

Studies to date have found up to 10 different kinds of mutations of the virus. This number remains very small compared to seasonal flu.

If the spread of SARS-CoV-2 continues at the same rate of mutation, a single vaccine, such as measles or chickenpox, may be sufficient to protect against Covid-19 disease.
