Friedrich Ratzel 1897 book Political Geography is taken to be the dawn of modern geopolitics. By contributing to the establishment of political geography, Ratzel paved the way for the transformation into geopolitics. The term ‘geopolitics” was first used by in 1916 by Rudolf Kjellen, who emphasised the significance of geography in the formation of states.There are some principle geopolitical theories used in geopolitical analyses and assessments. Some of these include Mackinder’s Land Dominance Theory, Mahan’s Sea Dominance Theory, Spykman’s Rimland Theory, Scitaklian’s Air Dominance Theory, Fukuyama’s End of History Thesis, Huntington’s Conflict of Civilisations Thesis and Brzezinski’s Great Chessboard Theory. Mackinder’s Land Dominance Theory, Mahan’s Sea Dominance Theory, Spykman’s Rimland Theory are considered to be classical geopolitical theories while Scitaklian’s Air Dominance Theory, Fukuyama’s End of History Thesis, Huntington’s Conflict of Civilisations Thesis and Brzezinski’s Great Chessboard Theory are categorised as modern geopolitical theories.
