20/01/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- The United Nations (UN) has announced that 7 UN members, including Iran, have lost their right to vote in the General Assembly due to debts they have not paid.

Un Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote a letter to General Assembly President Volkan Bozkır, explaining that the members in question are Niger, Libya, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Iran and Zimbabwe.

The UN charter calls for such a voting rights suspension for countries whose arrears equal or surpass the amount of the contributions due from them to UN coffers in the previous 2 years.

The letter, which included each country's total debt, also included the amount that must be paid before the right to vote can be re-obtained.
