Görkem ŞEKEROĞLU -TDO- At least 41 people drowned over the weekend when their boat capsized in the Central Mediterranean, the U.N. said on Wednesday (24 February). The latest incident involved migrants fleeing conflict-stricken Libya and seeking better life in Europe.

A joint statement issued by the U.N. migration and refugee agencies stated that the dead were among at least 120 migrants on a dinghy that left Libya on Feb. 18. The dinghy sank two days later, it said.

The survivors were rescued by the commercial vessel “Vos Triton” and taken to Porto Empedocle in Sicily, Italy. The rescue operation carried out by the said vessel was described to be of a difficult and delicate nature by the UNHCR. Many others died during the rescue operation, it said.

The incident was the most recent on the Central Mediterranean migration corridor, where about 160 migrants headed to Europe have lost their lives since the start of 2021.
