İrem UZUN -TDO- The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.Police officers are working to identify 39 people as part of a wide-ranging murder investigation.
Essex police were alerted to the discovery of the bodies of 38 adults and one teenager in a unit at an industrial park in Grays by the ambulance service at 1.40am on Wednesday. Police said they believed the lorry had come from Bulgaria and entered the U.K. at Holyhead, in North Wales, on Saturday. The port is one of the main entry points for ferries from Ireland.
The lorry driver, named locally as Mo Robinson, 25, from Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, is being questioned by police. Essex Police said it had launched a murder investigation. Alongside the murder inquiry, a parallel investigation has begun to examine whether organized crime networks – widely believed to be behind a recent surge in people-smuggling operations seeking to bring migrants to the U.K. – played a role.
Commenting on the U.K.’s worst tragedy in almost 20 years, Ch Supt Andrew Mariner, of Essex police, said: “This is a tragic incident where a large number of people have lost their lives. Our inquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened. We are in the process of identifying the victims; however, I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process”.
