İrem UZUN -TDO- At least 15 people were killed Thursday after a blaze tore through a nursing home in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as "a terrible tragedy”.
Careless handling of electric heaters was believed to have caused the blaze, said Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova. The fire started on the upper floor of the two-storey apartment building which had been converted into a nursing home, according to the emergencies ministry. Bars were visible on windows on both floors of the home and smoke was pouring out of the upper floor windows after firefighters forced their way into the building. “According to preliminary information, 33 people were in the building at the time of the fire and 15 of them died,” according to emergency service’s statement.
President Zelensky confirmed the death toll of 15 reported by emergency services, adding: “We all pray that there will be no more”. Zelensky offered his condolences on Facebook and said an investigation must take place to prevent a similar tragedy from taking place again. He urged the interior minister to take charge of an inquiry into the incident.
