27/05/2021

Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- In 2019, the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment's Galapagos National Park and Galapagos Conservation Agency confirmed that the tortoise belonging to a species called Chelonoidis phantasticus, which is estimated to be over 100 years old, belongs to an extinct species.

The statement said that they had confirmed that the female tortoise, which was found during a joint discovery by the organizations, belonged to a species called Chelonoidis phantasticus, which is thought to be extinct.

The information was obtained by geneticists from Yale University in the United States (USA) comparing the DNA of the female tortoise found in 2019 with samples from a male turtle found in a 1906 expedition by the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and stored in a museum.
