24TH JULY MARCH IN GÜMÜLCINE (KOMOTINI) AND COMMEMORATION FOR THE DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. SADIK AHMET
In Gümülcine (Komotini), in order to advocate the rights of Western Thrace (Batı Trakya) Muslim Turkish minority and in order to make themselves heard by the world, a very important march was carried out on 24th Julyby Friendship, Equality and Peace Party (FEP Party).The crowd who gathered together in front of the FEP Party office voiced their demands and aims with the statements made in Turkish and Greek after the march which was finished in front of the old Rhodope Governor’s building. After the march that the many are gathered from Greece and many neighboring countries and after the speeches in front of the governor’s building, the participants of the march commemorated Dr. Sadık Ahmet who was one of the most important leaders of Western Thrace Muslim Turkish minority and the founder of FEP Party with the ceremony next to his grave. Dr. Sadık Ahmet lost his life in a dubious traffic accident on 24th of July 1995 and his car which he was driving during the accident was stolen from FEP Party headquarter and could not be found again.
Although Western Thrace Muslim Turkish minority was living together and equally with Greek people nearly a century ago on the lands of our ancestors, today, the rights of Muslim Turkish minority which were given in the Lausanne Peace Treaty on 24th July in 1924 is seized and Muslim Turkish community is under a systematic suppress and assimilation efforts on our ancestors’ land. With this important march carried out on 24th of July, Muslim Turkish minority was rose their voices in democratic ways against the all unfair practices for their basic rights such as religion, language, education. They also showed their stance, unity and solidarity to all the world.
Lastly, during the march, Western Thrace Turkish minority reacted to the unpleasant coup attempt in the motherland and voiced their stance with Turkish nation.
