Selin ATAY-TDO- Chinese President Xi Jinping told the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that Beijing has “no intention to fight either a Cold War or a hot one with any country,” amid growing tensions between Beijing and the Washington

The annual gathering of world leaders conducted in a virtual way this year because of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

“We will continue to narrow differences and resolve disputes with others through dialogue and negotiation. We will not seek to develop only ourselves or engage in zero sum game,” Chinese President said in a pre-recorded video statement.

President Jinping made a call for a global response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) and gave the World Health Organization a leading role in this issue.

“Facing the virus, we should enhance solidarity and get through this together. We should follow the guidance of science, give full play to the leading role of the World Health Organization,” Chinese President said.

“Any attempt of politicizing the issue or stigmatization must be rejected.” Jinping added.

On the other hand, the U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans for his country to leave the Geneva-based WHO. He also accused WHO of being a puppet of China, but Trump’s claim was denied by World Health Organization.

By warning that “we are moving in a very dangerous direction”, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the General Assembly earlier on Tuesday that everything must be done to avoid a new Cold War.
