Headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen sold 10.83 million vehicles in 2018, outpacing the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Toyota partnership.
Toyota announced last December that it may have sold 10.72 million vehicles in 2019, according to its estimates. The partnership is expected to make its sales figures for this year public in the coming weeks.
General Motors, the American car giant, has been the world's top vehicle-selling company for 70 years, but in 2008 Toyota took that title away from General Motors.
