VISAS FOR TURKISH CITIZENS TO BE LIFTED

27/11/2016

Minister for the European Union and Negotiator-in-Chief Volkan Bozkır ha delivered a statement regarding visa-free travel to European countries for Turkish citizens.
In a briefing on relations between Turkey and the EU, Bozkır said that due to an understanding reached with the European Union, citizens of the Republic of Turkey will be able to travel to Schengen zone countries without a visa from October 2016 onwards.
IMPORTANT STEPS TOWARDS EU MEMBERSHIP
An agreement between Turkey and the EU had been signed last month, following the long talks led by Turkey in stopping the intensive flow of immigrants to Europe. New steps were taken by Turkey and the EU for speeding up membership negotiations after a long time.
REACCEPTANCE OF REFUGEES IN JUNE
If Turkey takes the measures necessary to stop the flow of immigrants, the EU in return will strengthen negotiations for EU membership, will ease visa restrictions for Turkish citizens travelling to Schengen Zone countries and provide financial support worth EUR 3 billion.
In return for the financial aid, the EU will demand that Turkey retain more refugees and will therefore ensure the protection of the Greek border. From June 2016 onwards, Turkey will begin implementing the provisions of the reacceptance agreement. The starting date of visa-free travel has been set as October 2016.
