Selin ATAY-TDO- The Union of International Democrats (UID) has filed a criminal complaint with the Brussels prosecutor's office against a racist Greek lawmaker who tore up the Turkish flag.

A criminal complaint shared by the UID called for the launch of a necessary investigation into the provocation of racist Ioannis Lagos in the European Parliament, stating it contravened the Anti-Racism Law in Belgium and the 14th Article of the European Treaty on Human Rights.

The court was asked to identify violations of other laws relating to racism, discrimination and hate crimes, adding that "determinations should be made regarding all other crimes that will be deemed to have been committed as a result of the investigation".

The criminal complaint requested that Lagos's immunity be lifted and that a legal investigation be conducted.

Lagos, deputy of the far-right Golden Dawn party, tore up the Turkish flag during a parliamentary debate on the large number of refugees on the Greek islands. The Greek lawmaker accused Turkey of fuelling the crisis.

Subsequently, the Ankara Public Prosecutor's Office launched a formal investigation into Greek lawmaker Ioannis Lagos on charges of "publicly insulting the Turkish flag."

Lagos had also been charged in the past with blackmailing, racketeering, trafficking in women, and use of unregistered firearm. Currently, he is being investigated for" forming and operating a crime syndicate".
